William Johnson Obituary

William Johnson was born April 24, 1954 in Georgetown County to the late Tommy Johnson and Kathleen Simmons. He was the first of their seven children. He was predeceased by his brothers, Earl and Randy.

He was educated in the Georgetown County and Horry County school systems. His vocations included farming, construction and brick masonry. However, he was primarily trained and skilled in concrete finishing, working many years alongside expert concrete finisher Jack Mazyck. William’s hobbies included, shooting pool, fishing, laughing and joking with family and friends, watching old Westerns on TV and just relaxing with a “cold one”. Although he sometimes put on a gruff exterior, for those who knew him well, it was easy to see he had a warm heart. This could especially be seen in the way he interacted with his many nephews, nieces and other young ones.

His health declined in the last few months of his life and he finally succumbed to the last enemy, death (1 Cor 15:26) on July 7, 2024 while enroute to Embrace Hospice House in Myrtle Beach S.C. He will really be missed by those who knew him. Of special note, William was also predeceased by his dear friend and long-time companion Elizabeth Baker. Her grandchildren were so close to William they actually referred to him as “Poppa”.

William is survived by his brothers, Daniel (Wanda) Johnson, Douglas (Donna) Johnson, Michael (Rebecca) Johnson and his sister, Emma (T. Norman) Bryant and a multitude of nieces, nephews as well as aunts, uncles and cousins from both the Johnson and Simmons families.
