Walter Marks Obituary

Walter J. Marks, 85, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, formerly of North Haven and Hamden, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Catherine (Kay) Griffin Marks, with whom he shared 62 loving years of marriage.

Born on May 11, 1940, in New Haven, Connecticut, Walter was the son of the late Nathan H. Marks and June Shaw, and the stepson of the late Ethel Hall Marks. He was a proud graduate of North Haven High School, Class of 1958, and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy.

Walter, affectionately known as "Wally" to friends and family, spent many years working as a route sales driver for the Southern New England Ice Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Later in life, he found great enjoyment working as a groundskeeper at Arrowhead Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, a role that suited his love for the outdoors. He also spent his early years working on his family's Dairy farm, instilling in him a lifelong dedication to hard work.

Walt was a talented drummer in his younger years and a proud member of the Lancraft Fife and Drum Corps. He was also an avid UConn women’s basketball fan and took great pride in his home garden, especially when tending to his cherished tomato plants. These simple pleasures brought him great happiness throughout his life.

He was a devoted father to John Marks and his wife, Lisa, and a loving grandfather to Rebecca and Ryan Marks. Walt was predeceased by his brothers Nathan Marks Jr. and David Marks, and is survived by his sisters-in-law, Judy Marks and Barbara Marks, along with several beloved nieces and nephews.

Walter will be remembered for his kind heart, strong work ethic, and deep devotion to family. His gentle spirit and enduring love have left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

A private service will be held at a later date.
