Thomas Andrew Chizmadia Berndt

Thomas “Tommy” Andrew Chizmadia Berndt passed away peacefully at home on November 21, 2025, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Born on October 2, 1949 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he was the son of Andrew Chizmadia, Jr., a highly decorated World Word II veteran, and Irene Chizmadia (neé Madack).

Tommy’s early life was shaped by both loss and love. His father passed away in February 1952, when Tommy was still very young. In May 1954, his mother married William “Bill” Berndt, who embraced Tommy and raised him as his own son. The family lived in several locations in Hudson County, New Jersey, Edison, New Jersey and Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey before settling in the Fords section of Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, where Tommy spent the rest of his childhood. 

He graduated from John F. Kennedy Memorial High School in 1967. At just 19 years old, Tommy became the youngest Police Cadet ever appointed to the Woodbridge Township Police Department. He devoted his entire career to the department, rising to the rank Lieutenant. Known for his calm presence, steady leadership and dedication, he retired in 2000 after a lifetime of honorable service.

Tommy was predeceased by his father, Andrew Chizmadia, Jr.; his Pop, William Berndt (1976); his mother, Irene Berndt (1998), and his beloved wife of 39 years, Regina “Ginny” Berndt (neé Arnold) who passed away in April 2025.

He leaves behind three daughters who brought great meaning to his life: Nicole Broschard of Winslow, New Jersey; Heather Howell, her husband Rich, and family of Bridgewater, New Jersey- both from his first marriage- and Melissa Lang, whom he raised as his own. Melissa lived with him, cared for him, and shared in his daily routines, bringing him comfort, purpose, and companionship. He was also the proud grandfather of Ethan and Elysa Broschard, who brought him tremendous joy.

Tommy is also survived by his sister-in law and brother-in law Terri and Teddy Erdelyi and his niece Katie, of Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania. They were not only family but an essential source of support, comfort, and care. Their presence in his life during his final years was constant, compassionate, and deeply meaningful. Tommy held profound gratitude and affection for them, and their devotion made a true difference in his journey.

In retirement, Tommy embraced the things he loved most. He had a passion for motorcycles, firearms, skiing, and traveling. He spent many of his retirement years in Stowe, Vermont where he enjoyed the mountain lifestyle, and later settled in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he spent his days surrounded by sunshine, simple routines and the quieter pace he had earned. 

His memory will live on in the stories shared by family, the colleagues who respected him, and the generations who will continue to carry his legacy forward.
