Thomas Joseph Appel, 85, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in Conway, South Carolina, with his only son by his side.
Born on August 1, 1940, in Albany, New York, Thomas was the son of Joseph Appel and Kathleen Appel, who preceded him in death. He grew up in Albany, spending summers on Nassau Lake and exploring the trails of Plotterkill, places and pastimes that brought him peace and joy.
Thomas proudly served in the United States Navy during the 1960s aboard the USS Independence. He later worked for several years at General Electric and was an accomplished artist and member of the Oak Room Artists Association in Schenectady, New York. He enjoyed black-and-white Westerns, playing guitar, and the simple pleasures of nature and lake life.
He lived in Phoenix, Arizona, Naples, Florida, and for the past 15 years made his home in Conway, South Carolina.
Thomas is survived by his son, Andrew Joseph Appel, Sr. (wife Tania); grand daughter, Emily Nina Lupien (husband Chris), grandson, Andrew Joseph Appel, Jr.; and great-granddaughter Imogene Francis Lupien.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the compassionate and dedicated staff at Pruitt Nursing Home, whose kindness and exceptional care meant so much during Thomas’s time with them.
Plans to gather at a later date for a memorial service to honor and celebrate his life are being made and will be announced once the arrangements have been completed.
