Samuel Lund Sox Jr.

Samuel Lund Sox, Jr. age 91, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, after an extended illness. He was a beloved dad, “Dodah”, great “Dodah”, and friend. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1958. He attended Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, where he was an active choir and church body member. He also spent several years working at the food pantry at Shepherd of the Sea, greeting folks as they came in and making people feel welcome. 

Samuel was the son of Samuel Lund Sox, Sr, and Viola Coulter Sox, both deceased. Also preceded in death are his wife Sarah Graham Sox, his sister Sylvia Sox, his brother Harold David Sox, and his nephew Philip William Peoples.  

Originally from Greensboro, NC he later moved to Raleigh, NC, where he sold Life Insurance, for over forty years. He retired in  Myrtle Beach.

Samuel was a self-taught musician who found his niche in the bass guitar. He not only played this instrument while in the Army at places like the Hamptons, but he also played almost every other weekend with a band called Charlie Chickless and the Moonlighters.

He was also a professional photo developer and supplied photographs for both aviation and World War history books. He had his pilot's license and flew twin-engine airplanes. He was a true daredevil and raced cars as a teenager. He loved life. He was always up for the next adventure. 

He was a die-hard Tarheel fan and enjoyed nothing more than to cheer on his team with his family. He hated Duke, as we all did, and enjoyed the banter with anyone who was not a Tarheel fan. 

He was a true patriot and had a love for his country. He stood on morality and the word of God. He would have voted for the “felon” for sure in the next election because he believed in what the man stood for and had immense respect for him. He loved his family, his church family, his choir members, and his pantry workers, and he never met a stranger.

 He had a zest for life and a positive attitude, even up until his last breath. He died sporting a Darth Vadar tee shirt and a true “Harry Potter” scar on his forehead, from stitches he acquired from falling and busting his head open. He did not take life too seriously. He did not fear death, because he knew he was going to be with Jesus when he died, and that gave all of us great comfort and peace. 

I often teased him that Grand Strand Hospital and Brightwater Rehab facility would write a new rule book because of his daily antics while in their care. These antics included but were not limited to…pulling IVs out of his arm, stripping and walking down the hallways, calling 911 and reporting that he was being held against his will, and being abused, having his phone removed from his room so that he could not report abuse, falling over 12 times while in rehab because he refused to ring the nurses for help, and frequenting Mcleod ER so many times that I was told they were going to name a wing after him. These were just a few of the things he did on the daily to keep these poor nurses busy and on their toes for sure, but they loved him even still. 

He is survived by sons Samuel Lund Sox III, and his wife Lia Michelle Roberts of Adelaide, Australia. Eric Lee Sox, of Myrtle Beach, daughter Heather Sox Shoemaker and husband Vaughn M. Shoemaker of Myrtle Beach, and foster son Greg Allen of Greensboro, N.C. 

He had five grandchildren, David Eric Youngsam Sox of Florida, Rachel Sarah Riotto, and husband Joseph Gandolph Riotto of Myrtle Beach,  Ashley Michelle Sox of Florida, Hunter Vaughn Shoemaker of Myrtle Beach and Michael John Webster of Adelaide, Australia. He also had three great-grandchildren, Madeline Selene Riotto, Liam Joseph Riotto, and Lily Anne Riotto, from Myrtle Beach, and a niece, Anna Marie Halsey of Greensboro, N.C.

There will be a celebration of Life Service on Friday, August 9 at 10 am at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church. This celebration service will be with military honors. Afterward, we will have a graveside service at the Florence National Cemetery, with military honors, where we will lay both of my parents to rest.
