USAF SMSGT (Ret) Robin Pat Dixon passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 5, 2025. His final hours were filled with family laughter and his beloved do-wop music.
Rob was born on February 24, 1939, in Norfolk, VA., but spent much of his youth with his parents, the late USN (Ret) Clayton and Eleanor Dixon, in Lexington Park, MD. At the age of 17, Rob quit high school, lied about his age, and joined the US Air Force. At the age of 18, he found himself in the back of a transport plane heading to Tripoli, Libya, on TDY from his first duty base in Arkansas. He next spent 3 years stationed in England, where he developed a life-long fondness for the town of Bournemouth and a bit of a British accent.
His next assignment was to March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA, where he met a young WAF named Doris Pierce from the small town of Pacolet, South Carolina. One afternoon, Rob saw Doris walking back to her dormitory (in 3in. heels) and offered her a ride in his ’56 Chevy convertible. They were married 6 months later.
Rob served in Vietnam from 1965-1966. Additional duty bases included stops in Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Michigan, and Virginia. Rob’s last assignment was as First Sgt. of Headquarters Squadron at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. Rob retired from active duty in 1984, later taking a civilian job as head of the MBAFB MWR Supply. In this role, Rob revolutionized the morale, welfare, and recreation processes. When the MBAFB closed in 1993, Rob and Doris packed up and moved to Nashville, TN, where they would spend the next 8 years until retirement.
In 2000, Rob and Doris returned to Horry County and built their dream home in Conway, SC. Many years of love, laughter, and pool parties followed. In 2017, Rob and Doris bought a home in Seagate Village in what used to be “base housing.” Their new home was just 3 units down from where they had lived when stationed in Myrtle Beach.
Rob is survived and missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris; and his children Troy (Jene) Dixon and Kelli (Paul) Fookes. Forever cherished and remembered as Poppy: “The Coolest Guy” by his 4 grandchildren: Blake (Ann) Dixon, Dr. Kaylee Dixon, Abigale (Matthew) Fookes, Daniel Fookes, and special niece Deneen (Randall) Inman, along with numerous poker buddies whose money he enjoyed winning.
Rob is also survived by brothers Tom Dixon and Tim Dixon of Maryland, nieces Stacy and Heather, and nephews Scott, Mark, Dale, and Timothy.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Ocean Woods Cemetery, 2408 South Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach.
