Rhea Carter Obituary

Rhea Greene Carter of North Litchfield, Pawleys Island, died Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Rhea was predeceased by her parents: Daner D. and John I. Greene and her husband: Henry M. Carter, Jr. She is survived by her daughter: Clair Bell (Tom); grandson: Thomas G. Bell, III (English); great granddaughter: Mary Lile Bell and several cousins. 

A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, and a graduate of Madison College, she was a retired teacher, guidance counselor, and school principal. While living in Winston-Salem, she was an active community volunteer serving as a docent at Reynolda House Museum of Early American Art, The Southeastern Center for Creative Art, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, and Old Salem. She was a member of The Flower Lore Garden Club and The Friends of Brenner Children's Hospital. After moving to North Litchfield, she was a member of The Friends of Brookgreen Gardens and PEO Sorority. She was a former member of  Eastern Star and delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 years. She was an active member of Centenary UMC in Winston-Salem where she served as a member of the Administrative Board and the Altar Guild. While in North Litchfield she was a member of Belin UMC and the Belin Sunday School Class. She served two terms on the Litchfield Beach Property Owners Association Board of Directors. She also served as a member of the Georgetown County Board of Zoning Appeals.

The great loves of her life were God, her family and friends, being on the beach and traveling the world. Thanks to her wonderful caregivers for making it possible for her to stay in her home until her death.

A Memorial Celebration will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 Bus, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial gifts may be made to the Rhea and Henry Carter Scholarship for International Study at Randolph-Macon College; Attention Gift Processing, PO Box 5005, Ashland, VA 23005.
