Mark Brophy Obituary

Mark A Brophy, 69, died Friday, February 7, 2025 at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born February 23, 1955 in Greenville, Mississippi. He was the son of the late Edward Aloysius Brophy and Anne (Snyder) Brophy. Mark was the youngest of 10 children. Survivors include two sisters, Claire Wallace and Eileen Brown and two brothers, Francis Brophy and Gerard Brophy. Mark was predeceased by brothers, Thomas A. Brophy and Edward J Brophy, and sisters Cecilia Ruppert, Nancy Jordan and Mary McQueen.


Mark graduated from Greenville High School in Mississippi and earned an Associate of Science degree in Chemistry from Delta State College in Cleveland, Mississippi. Mark went on to the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Textile Chemistry. He spent his entire career as a chemical engineer working in the Textile industry following his older brothers, father, and grandfather into Textile product development, management, design and processing. He had a brilliant mind for chemistry. In 1998 and 1999 he was credited with creating two patents for chemical formulation in the dyeing and processing of textile materials.


Following college, Mark started his career with Allied Chemical in Richmond, VA. He also worked for Mohawk Industries in Dublin, Georgia and Monsanto/Solutia in Atlanta, Georgia.


Mark loved to travel, enjoyed a great meal, music and art and talked fondly about his many trips all over the world. He lived in Dublin, Georgia and Ackworth, Georgia for many years before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee where he ended his career and retired to Myrtle Beach. Mark helped to care for his older brother Ed before his passing. Mark didn’t know a stranger and made many new friends in Myrtle Beach. He will be missed by his brothers and sisters along with 31 nieces and nephews.
