Harold Donald Davis, age 85, of 66 Cypress Lane, Briarcliffe Acres, Myrtle Beach went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 1st following a brief illness.

Harold, otherwise known as “Don” or “HD”, was born on April 8th, 1939 to Nellie and Chesley Otto Davis in Laurens, S.C. He had one older sibling, Herman C Davis. He graduated from Ford High School in 1956 and attended the USMA Prep School at West Point, NY at age 17. 

He continued his education while working during his early years and completed correspondence courses at Furman and the University of Tennessee. 

He was employed by The Torrington Company in South Carolina and Georgia for 30+ years and Standard Gage, in New York, for 5 years.  While at Torrington, he worked many years as the Quality Control Manager. 

During his final years at Torrington, he was responsible for helping launch a manufacturing plant in Wuxi, China.

He lived and worked just outside of Shanghai, China for 2 years prior to retiring. 

Harold married Dorothy Rae Franks in 1960 and was married for 32 years and lived in Laurens, Myrtle Beach and Lake Greenwood prior to Dorothy’s passing in January of 1992.  They had two children.

Harold married Sally Beth Mcabee, from Greenville, SC in 1996. They resided at Lake Greenwood and Myrtle Beach.

Harold was an avid reader and quite a wordsmith in his earlier years and was the happiest while cutting grass on his Snapper mower.  He was an expert at installing and maintaining sprinkler systems. He loved watching green things grow and he propagated many a plant and loved giving them away.  His favorite hobby was flying airplanes and he enjoyed spending time with his family.  During his retirement years, most days you could find him riding his golf cart around greeting neighbors and special friends near his home. He would always lend a helping hand if someone was in need.

He was super handy in and outside the home and would always love to finish off the day by grilling a great steak or a fantastic burger.

He was the best at giving advice on just about any topic, but his favorites were flying, the weather, politics and religion.  He wasn’t afraid to discuss any controversial subject.

He was a long-time member of the Church of the Epiphany, in Laurens, SC where he served as a lay reader and Jr Warden. He was also a long-time member of Trinity Church in Myrtle Beach.  He was a Mason and member of the Hejaz Shriners. He served in the Civil Air Patrol and logged many hours as a private pilot.  He taught flying lessons at the Laurens County Airport and enjoyed the tradition of cutting shirt tails off after having his students take their solo flight.

He is survived by Beth Mcabee Davis and his children, Donna Davis Askins (Charles)of Greenville, S.C. and Harold D Davis, II (Stacy) of Savannah, Ga along with Brittaney Bishop Mann (Scott) of Columbia, Jason Bishop (Melissa) of Fort Myers, FL and Richard “Tripp” Bishop of Myrtle Beach as well as three very special granddaughters and five very special step-granddaughters and one step-grandson.
