Edna Clay Obituary

Edna Mae Clay “Mama Clay”
February 17, 1940 – December 3, 2024 (age 84)

Edna Mae Clay passed away peacefully Tuesday December 3, 2024, at Watercrest Assisted living and Memory Care, Myrtle Beach, SC. Edna was born February 17, 1940, in Elizabeth, WV., a daughter of late Roscoe Starcher and Eva Leona Hanna-Moles. Edna was preceded in death by her beloved first son Kenneth Clay Jr. (1958-1980) Edna is survived by her son: Duke Clay and his wife Mary of Rock Hill, SC, and son: John Clay and his wife Patty of Myrtle Beach, SC. Grandsons: Eric Clay and his wife Stephanie of Orlando, FL, Nick and Dylan Clay of Columbia, SC, and Austin and his wife Samantha of Tampa Bay, FL. Great-grandson: Ethan Clay son of Eric and Stephanie. Sister: Doris Braucher of Caldwell, WV as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Edna gave everything to raising her three sons. Always putting everyone else first and giving love and support to all.

Edna lived in Rootstown, Ohio for 36 years working and raising her boys. She was employed with Shorts Funeral Home for many of those years. She enjoyed pottery classes and helping with the school football and baseball programs. Having a home for her boys and later in life her grandsons to come visit was so important to her. Spending Christmases at Grandma’s house was always filled with love, laughter, and most of all long lasting memories.

After retirement she sold her home and moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She enjoyed many days at the beach and loved helping with the protection of sea turtles nesting along the coast. She worked a part time job at the Christmas Mouse in the Hammock Shops located in Pawleys Island, SC mostly just for fun. She spent most of her time with the neighborhood club house events helping with planning holiday parties and dinners out. She also enjoyed having fun with the Red Hats Ladies Club and later the Moose Club.

Travel became a special time in her life as she enjoyed cruises and many vacations with family and friends. Living in Woodlake Village and making many friends where her nickname quickly became “Beach Mama”. Edna was so proud of raising her sons and loved spending time with her grandsons. Grandma Clay was always ready for an adventure and never said “no”. A true Grandma.

Edna was there for so many and seemed happier when giving wanting nothing in return. She will be missed by all.

A memorial is being planned for spring of 2025 at Rootstown Home Land Cemetery. A celebration of life and graveside service where she will be laid to rest with her son Kenny.
