David E Gunnells, 77, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina passed away on February 11, 2025.
David was born December 15, 1947, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Roy E. Gunnells and Ruth Feiden Gunnells.
David was the beloved husband of Margaret, father of Thor, Heather, and Zak, stepfather of Marianne, grandfather of fourteen, and great grandfather of four. His love for his family will be
remembered by those who were privileged enough to have known him. He will be greatly missed. David was a lifelong educator, gifted with a keen mind and quick wit. He taught middle and high
school, both regular and special education. Teaching history was his true passion. He was one of the youngest teachers hired in the state of Missouri, and also the youngest teacher to retire
after 25 years of service. After retirement, he continued to work in education for Athens Technical College teaching English as a Second Language and administering GED exams.
As a young man, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, and he also played a fair game of golf. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, playing the bagpipes, and cooking for company. He was fond of watching old movies, visiting the beach, and reading in his favorite chair. David was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and served as the president of the Dewy Rose, Georgia chapter for a term.
The family would like to thank the skilled and compassionate staff of the Neuro ICU unit at Grand Strand Hospital and the Embrace Hospice House for his care.
Funeral Mass for David will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church on February 28, 2025 at 11:00 Am. Burial of the Urn will follow at Ocean Woods Cemetery, with a reception to follow at Covenant Towers.
David was a longtime member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, and in lieu of flowers the family requests a donation in David’s name to St. Andrew Catholic Church.
