Ann L. Schaefer (Nancy)
LIVE LOVE LAUGH! That best describes Nancy Schaefer. Just ask anyone who knew her. Born with a big heart, Nancy left us on December 6, and for almost 92 years she was the queen of silliness, naughty limericks and practical jokes. After all who throws a cat funeral for a friend who lost their beloved pet playing “Whats New Pussycat” on slow speed on the stereo? Who fills their friend’s mailbox with popcorn on their birthday? Who hangs underwear on their neighbor’s front yard tree while they are on vacation? And at her eightieth birthday party Nancy dressed as a pregnant woman for laughs.
Born on January 13, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey to Morris and Ruth Clisham Simonson, Nancy was the younger of two daughters. She met the love of her life, Peter R. Schaefer, working at Union Carbide in Newark. Having given birth to daughter Diane from a brief first marriage, who Pete legally adopted, they rounded out their family with Donna in 1964. They were transferred to
Springfield, Pennsylvania for nine months before being transferred again with Union Carbide to Florence, South Carolina. It proved to be quite the culture shock coming from a big city to this little southern town in the mid-sixties. Nancy was taken back when her next-door neighbor welcomed her and mentioned that she had never met a yankee or a Catholic before. Nancy responded, “Well isn’t it wonderful! Now you have!” Her wicked sense of humor was loved by all.
Once in Florence, she did administrative work for Air Carolina, Florence Airlines, and Bruce Hospital. After she lost Pete, Nancy moved to Myrtle Beach to be near her daughter and in retirement worked part-time at SteinMart. She was a resident of Covenant Towers, and most recently Reflections Assisted Living. This world is a little bleaker without her here. She could cry with you one moment and have you laughing through those same tears in the next.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Diane DeVaughn Stokes of Myrtle Beach and Donna Fosmire of Columbia and her sons-in-law Chuck and Eric. She also has two loving grandchildren Alex and Regan Fosmire. The family would like to thank, Sonny, Chelsea, Jennifer and all the wonderful staff at Reflections, as well as Scott, Michael, Bill, and Vi at Agape Hospice, for their loving care of Nancy in her final years.
